I first came across the boiling frog experiment through a short film I watched. What I have read about the scientific accuracy of this anecdote, which was also used in an earlier film made to raise awareness of global warming, is confusing. Accounts of various experiments describe frogs reacting differently: some say that when the temperature rises very slowly, the frog really does fail to notice the change and is boiled alive; many others say it notices the rising temperature and leaves the container. Whatever the truth may be, I think it is a brief, clear and very powerful illustration of social manipulation and the ways governments and corporations reshape populations and get them accustomed to change. Here, the film explains how boiling frog syndrome affects people in society and renders them passive. Sound familiar?
