Food, Inc. (2008) and the Meat Industry

Food, Inc. is a documentary released in 2008. Many people may not know this film, which shows us the harsh realities of the global meat industry. Through powerful storytelling and footage, it takes viewers through the production of the meat we eat, especially chicken, and shows where the industry’s increasing concentration in the hands of a few companies has led. In the video I put together below, I wanted to share a section of the documentary with you. Chicken production and claims that the chicken we eat could be harmful to our health briefly became a major topic of debate in Turkey, too. According to this documentary, which focuses on the American meat industry, the chickens we eat grow at twice the normal rate, while the use of antibiotics in their feed contributes to increasing antibiotic resistance in microbes over successive generations. That raises questions about the long-term effects on human health of eating meat produced with such intensive antibiotic use. In cramped production facilities, with the development of industrial production-line technology, chickens are raised completely cut off from nature, under stress, crowded together and growing much, much faster than normal. We still consume plenty of them in our homes and restaurants.
